It doesn't matter what age you are, you need to do something to keep your muscle and maintain fitness. If you are still working and have got a physical job, great but is it enough?

The human body is an efficient machine. It will provide the muscle and fitness you need and it will remove what you don't need in order to conserve energy for the things that need it and it will look to store energy wherever possible for times when you are not consuming enough. The less you do as you age, the more your body will take away. As muscle requires a lot of energy to maintain the body does not like to keep it if it is not needed. We also lose muscle as we age through a process called Sarcopenia which starts around the age of 30 and accelerated after age 60. Even if you are young, if you have built up muscle and then do nothing your muscles will shrink to the level you are telling your body you need. Look at runners. They have told their bodies consistently through their lifestyles and exercise regimes that they do not need a lot of muscle so the body takes it away whereas body builders have done the opposite.

So, if you don't want to wither away as you age, you need to tell your body you still need your muscle. if you tell it consistently and give it the right nutrition it will provide what you ask for and you will be fit and strong and free to enjoy whatever it is you enjoy doing right into your 70s, 80s and beyond.

Your current fitness level, age, exercise experience and time availability each week will determine what programme you choose. It can be anything from bodyweight workouts at home to body building 5 days a week in the gym. Whatever suits you but do something. Doing nothing is not an option.

Remember, you can build muscle at any age with the right nutrition and stimulus. As Arnie said "It's not too late to start, it's too late not to"
